~Maligathanna Raja maha Viharaya~

Maligathanna, located in the district of Gampaha is well known for its panoramic view, hiking and floral varieties. The rock temple has a history that dated back centuries to the era of King Walagamba. When the Solees invaded Anradhapura kingdom in the 103BC the King fled to this part of the country seeking protection. According to the folklores with him was the sacred tooth relic which was to be secured form falling in to the hands of the invaders. This mountainous area provided the perfect safe house for the tooth relic, the palladium of the Kings. After the King regained his throne back in 89BC he built this rock temple as a tribute.
